Chris Cantell annouces New era for wireless networks

Mobile service providers have now the opportunity of their life, something they expected for a very long time, access to bandwidth currently reserved for terrestrial television broadcasts. That means the manufacturers will have greater security to develop better and cheaper devices, while the service providers will be able to offer high-speed Internet access on-the-move anywhere in the world by 2015 and lower rollout costs for new networks. All this is due to a UN telecom meeting on Thursday. Despite the fact that US residents will have access to this service by the end of 2009, while Europe, Africa, C hina, Russia and much of the Middle East will have the same access only six years later, US officials promoted a common decision at global level as the best option. Thursday decision is benefic for all the telecommunications companies because it means significant cost-savings as much as half of what the networks paid to roll out using higher frequencies, such as the 2,300 to 2,400 megahertz range. The negotiations lasted for a month between broadcasters and telecommunications companies or control of a prime stretch of radio spectrum. Nevertheless after all-night talks at the U.N.-hosted World Radiocommunications Conference in Geneva a decision was ruled out and Europe's powerful broadcasting interests won that the amount of bandwidth available for mobile services in their region to be half of what is offered elsewhere. The delay until 2015 also offers European broadcasters more time to examine interference problems, and allays Russian concerns about a possible conflict with military and aviation broadcasts that still use the frequency. Hopefully the merge will benefit the consumer as well and not only when it comes to the Internet speed. That might mean a cheaper bill for all mobile and phone possessors. Enjoy!
